Anywhere football is played, Texas is the force to reckon with. Its powerhouse programs produce the best football players in America. In The Republic of Football, Chad S. Conine vividly captures Texas’s impact on the game with action-filled stories about legendary high school players, coaches, and teams from around the state and across seven decades.

Drawing on dozens of interviews, Conine offers rare glimpses of the early days of some of football’s biggest stars. He reveals that some players took time to achieve greatness—LaDainian Tomlinson wasn’t even the featured running back on his high school team until a breakthrough game in his senior season vaulted him to the highest level of the sport—while others, like Colt McCoy, showed their first flashes of brilliance in middle school. In telling these and many other stories of players and coaches, including Hayden Fry, Spike Dykes, Bob McQueen, Lovie Smith, Art Briles, Lawrence Elkins, Warren McVea, Ray Rhodes, Dat Nguyen, Zach Thomas, Drew Brees, and Adrian Peterson, Conine spotlights the decisive moments when players caught fire and teams such as Celina, Southlake Carroll, and Converse Judson turned into Texas dynasties.

“This is a wonderful, well-written book, full of compelling details and stories. A ‘must read’ for any Texas football fan.” —DAVE CAMPBELL Dave Campbell’s Texas Football

It's no secret that I am a sports fanatic. One of my favorite pasttimes and family gatherings is when we are all watching a sporting event. I grew up watching Football and during my high school days, I didn't miss a single game (unless it was out of town). You can say football is a huge part of my life. You can also imagine my extreme jubilation at getting the chance to read The Republic of Football.

I thought Republic of Football was going to just give me a chronological order of football culture in Texas. That is not what I got and I loved it! I got to read about some huge games that helped to create the culture of winning and perseverance in their hometowns. I read about the underdog player knowing he needed to put in tons of work and effort to one day make it as a head coach. Getting to experience firsthand about high school football teams/coaches and their eras was more than I had hoped for.

One chapter that really stuck with me was THE GAME which was played after the JFK assassination. Conine perfectly described the fear of players and fans alike to care about something so seemingly trivial after such a devastating loss to our country. Conine also articulated the closeness and need for us to come together in sport during times like these in flawless fashion. Every chapter in, I grew more and more proud of the great state of Texas and our Football culture. Sure there were some ups and downs, but man do we know how to play some football.

There was also a theme that I noticed and looked for after a while. Believing in oneself and each other. Time after time, I saw this being said AND being put into practice by coaches and players and communities. If you take nothing from The Republic of Football in the way of sports, be sure to take believing in yourself and one another with you. That's a lesson that can be taught and applied regardless if it's football, cooking, parenting, or anything.

As I read about games long past, I saw myself in the bleachers watching my high school football team make a run in the playoffs. Those memories will forever hold a special place in my heart and thanks to The Republic of Football, I got to relive some of the greatest moments in Texas Football History.

Be sure to purchase a copy and give this a read. There's also a very sweet giveaway below for signed copies. For my fellow football fanatics, this is a book you are going to want to have on your bookshelves.
